30 Jan 2012 - Cranfield and Guernsey team up to deliver near-shore wind energy research
The States of Guernsey are teaming up with three UK universities, including Cranfield University, to investigate ways in which the island’s waters could be used to develop renewable energy.
The project aims to compare the estimated costs of generating energy from land based wind with other renewable sources such as offshore/near-shore wind, wave and tidal. This follows on from previous Cranfield projects which have evaluated the prospects for marine energy in the Channel Islands. The project will also assess the impact of combining wind energy into the Guernsey grid, taking account of intermittency and contribution to overall renewable energy generation across Guernsey.
Dr Stuart Wagland, from the Centre for Energy and Resource Technology at Cranfield, said: "Marine renewable energy is still very new and relatively expensive - it is an industry which will not happen overnight as careful planning and feasibility studies are required."
Fieldwork is expected to be carried out in 2012 with investigations into the potential renewable resources of wind, wave and tidal.
