Background

Mr Cattell is an experienced multimode accident investigator whose experience was gained with the UK Defence Accident Investigation Branch (DAIB). From a background in aviation engineering, he moved into air accident investigation before diversifying into all modes of accident investigation. Mr Cattell is on an education and scholarship pathway and has an MSc from Cranfield University, his other degrees include an MBA and a BSc (Hons) in Engineering Management.

Mr Cattell is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).

Mr Cattell joined Cranfield in 2020 as a Lecturer in Safety and Accident Investigation and is now a senior lecturer and Course Director for the Safety and Accident Investigation MSc. He teaches all aspects of Accident Investigation as well as supervising MSc students on the Safety and Accident Investigation course. Mr Cattell also runs an online Foundation in Healthcare Incident Investigation course for healthcare professionals.

Mr Cattell has specific accident investigation expertise in using drones for accident investigation, trauma management, multimode investigations and aviation fire investigation.

Current activities

Mr Cattell is a Senior Lecturer in Accident Investigation, based at the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing. He is course Director for the Safety and Accident Investigation MSC and leads the Healthcare Incident Investigation course. He also lectures on the Fundamentals of Accident Investigation and Applied Air, Rail and Marine Accident Investigation courses. Mr Cattell also manages the Forensics Courtroom skills shared module for the Safety and Accident Investigator delegates.

Current projects are centred around ensuring the Safety and Accident Investigation course is internationally accessible via remote teaching. This includes a parallel project to ensure that better synergy is created between basic accident investigation offerings and advanced standalone modules.
