Need help? How to use RSS

RSS Feed iconWhat is an RSS feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and are web pages designed to read by computers rather than a human being.  Feeds are often identified using the icon you can see on the right.

How do you use them?

You will need something called an RSS Reader, some browsers such as the latest versions of Internet Explorer (7 and newer), Firefox and Opera have one built in.  Alternatively you can use a separate application to read the feeds.  These applications range can be either browser based or downloadable.

Browser based readers such as Google Reader*, let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications, such as FeedDemon*, let you store them on your main computer.

Once you have a reader you can select a feed, customise it, and always be in touch with Cranfield University.

*Please note there are many readers available and Cranfield University doesn't recommend any specific one.
