09 Mar 2009 - Cranfield invests £50k in bursaries for innovative design course
Cranfield University is investing £50k in student bursaries to develop creative business leaders of the future, through its innovative Master of Design (MDes) in Innovation and Creativity in Industry .
The course addresses a recognised skills requirement – evidenced in the 2005 Cox Review of ‘Creativity in Business’ – for business people who understand creativity and its importance in all areas of the business. In order for UK businesses to be globally competitive and improve productivity, it is vital they drive creativity and design into the heart of engineering, technology and management processes.
Tania D’Souza, a current student on the MDes course, said: “This course encourages design thinking and innovation. It gives students a deeper understanding of how business, engineering and design work by learning each of the processes first hand. Students from any field or skill can be exposed to other disciplines therefore it gives them the ability to apply ‘design thinking’ in all aspects of industry.”
Mike Goatman, Course Director, said: “UK business is not realising its full creative potential. The MDes course is designed to develop graduates with the ability to recognise where an organisation’s creative strengths lie and enhance business processes to improve competitive advantage. These bursaries will help provide financial aid for those students who may otherwise be unable to undertake the course and reach their full potential.”
The MDes is run through the UK’s first national Centre for Competitive Creative Design, C4D – a £3.5m collaborative initiative with University of the Arts London based on the Cranfield campus. The aim of C4D is to encourage students, lecturers, researchers and industry partners to explore creativity and use design as a core driver to improve innovation and competitive practice in UK and global industries.
