18 Dec 2008 - World-leading research on your doorstep
Cranfield University, just seven miles from Central Milton Keynes, has been ranked third in the UK for the impact of its research in mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results released today.
In addition, Cranfield maintained or improved its position across all five areas of submission which included:
- Biological Sciences
- Agricultures, Veterinary and Food Services
- General Engineering and Mineral & Mining Engineering
- Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering
- Business and Management Studies.
Overall, 85% of the research submitted by Cranfield was of an international recognized status in terms of its originality, significance and rigor, with 50% being internationally excellent and 15% being of a world leading standard.
The RAE exercise is carried out every few years by the UK’s higher education funding bodies to assess the quality of university research. These bodies then use the results to allocate their funding over the coming years.
Professor Sir John O’Reilly, Vice-Chancellor, said: “We have maintained our reputation for the international quality of our research across the board. We have also achieved significant results in many of the University’s areas of expertise. Given the continuous improvement that has been seen across the higher education sector since RAE 2001, maintaining and growing Cranfield’s position is a positive outcome. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in preparing our RAE submission for all their hard work and effort.”
