Press Release
08 Dec 2006 - First Lorch Foundation Scholar announced for water science
The Centre for Water Science announced today that Katy Battrick has been selected as the first Lorch Foundation Scholar, building on the Centre’s long association with the Lorch Foundation. The Scholarship is awarded for the MSc in Water and Wastewater Engineering and will provide students with a bursary of £5000 to contribute to living costs, as well as covering fees.
Katy was selected from a pool of applicants for the Scholarship, leaving a successful post as Operations Manager with Pfizer in Kent to further her career in water treatment through studying for a Water Science MSc.
Rob Lorch, Trustee of the Lorch Foundation Trust and son of its founders, commented; “The Foundation Trustees are particularly pleased to award Katy this Scholarship in memory of the Founders. We hope that she will be the first of many Lorch scholars, and thus continue the long standing relationship between the Lorch Foundation Trust and Cranfield University’s Centre for Water Science.”
Receiving her award, Katy commented; “As a mature student and entirely self-supporting, receiving this award has of course been an incredible financial support. Aside from the financial aid though, this award has given me something more valuable. At a time when I was making significant life decisions to return to studying, I felt buoyed by the backing of the Lorch Foundation – especially given their roots and mission statement, which are so similar to my own.”
The Lorch Foundation is a Charitable Trust founded to support and promote education and research in the field of water purification and related sciences. The foundation was founded in 1979 by Dr. Walter and Dr. Diana Lorch who established the highly successful School of Water Sciences, now part of the University in the form of the Centre for Water Science.
