Cranfield's impact on manufacturing

Manufacturing firms today are adopting innovative competitive strategies based around speed, flexibility, new technologies and services. Such strategies are enabling UK manufacturers to both defend their existing markets and also open up new business opportunities.

Cranfield University plays a key role in ensuring the UK stays at the cutting edge of manufacturing research. Cranfield has been selected to lead three (with involvement in a further two), of the nine new EPSRC Centres for Innovative Manufacturing across the UK.  The Cranfield Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC) is also a driving force for both the rapid growth of established areas of manufacturing expertise and the development of new research areas. Our excellence in postgraduate manufacturing education and training is recognised by a number of professional institutions including the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).

Cranfield has close partnerships with some of the leading manufacturing organisations such as Rolls-Royce plc, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, General Motors and BAE Systems. Research partnerships are undertaken with more than 500 organisations of all sizes every year.

Major research and consultancy capability in manufacturing covers:

  • Design
