Cranfield University has many facilities and staff across several departments in this exciting area of forensic applications and research.  This results in a choice of masters degrees: Forensic Engineering and Science MSc and Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology MSc all of which attract experts from industry, the law, government organisations and defence.

The Forensic Institute (CFI) is based at the Shrivenham campus. Its aim is to provide a University focus for the application of science and technology to law enforcement particularly, through forensic science and engineering.  CFI currently operates through several specialities.  These include:

  • Forensic Science
  • Osteomics 
  • Security technology
  • Forensic archaeology and anthropology
  • Forensic computing
  • Ballistics and Firearms 
  • Forensic Engineering
  • Forensic Biomechanics
  • Forensic Education.

In addition there is the Centre for Archaelogical and Forensics Analysis.  The Centre has a strong research ethos and attracts funding from research councils, MOD and industry.  It has an established track record in metallurgy, materials science, forensic science and engineering,  archaeology and biomedical materials.  It is  making a strong contribution to addressing the problems of  global warming through its work on fuel cells and solar energy. The Centre for Archaeological and Forensic Analysis provides a wide range of scientific and analytical expertise for the archaeological and forensic communities. It specialises in the application of scientific techniques to a range of archaeological and forensic problems including provenance, dating and identity offering analysis in all materials, organic and inorganic, but is especially strong in ceramics, glass and bone.
