Waste Management

Experience

Waste management is a multidisciplinary field encompassing a range of disciplines including risk assessment, environmental chemistry, statistics, civil engineering, impact assessment, social sciences and business management.

IEH staff specialise in municipal waste characterisation, quantification and disposal analysis, and are versed in the interpretation of waste-specific policy and legislation. Risk assessments for the disposal of waste by incineration and, in particular, landfill are examples of IEH projects completed for government departments and agencies. Projects have also evaluated soil remediation following waste treatment/disposal and have assisted in the setting of soil guideline values. Water pollution as a consequence of waste disposal has also been examined. IEH scientists have also gained experience through contributions to the development of health impact assessments on a number of high-profile national or regional waste development projects.

Relevant areas of scientific expertise include:

  • Waste characterisation
  • Waste quantification
  • Minimisation and re-use alternatives
  • Disposal attitudes and perceptions
  • Risk assessment (comprising both exposure and hazard characterisation)
  • Environmental chemistry
  • Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
