Weapon Systems and Engineering Dynamics Group

We provide research, consultancy, and a range of educational courses in weapon systems and its design, weapon dynamics and related subjects. This also covers general engineering and design.

The WSED Group has undertaken weapon system studies, ballistic modelling and the simulation of weapons related phenomena for many years; gaining an international reputation for its work in the areas of weapon design, internal, external, terminal and forensic ballistics.

Meeting challenges from both military and civilian organisations, we apply our knowledge and expertise at the limits of current physical, engineering and technological capability to provide solutions to a broad range of problems.

Some examples of our recent and ongoing work are:

  • Expert witness
  • The design of an Ultra High Pressure Vessel that uses propellant to generate up to 15,000 times atmospheric pressure for the development of a rapid food sterilisation process
  • Computational dynamics techniques for studying the chemistry and heat transfer of multi-phase flows with combustion
  • The analysis of noise and vibration in pipework for North Sea oil installations
  • Weapon systems studies (Light, Medium and Heavy)
    • Comparative analysis between weapons from different Manufacturers
    • Integration and ergonomic study to evaluate weapon effectiveness
    • Accuracy and consistency study using Gun dynamic model
    • Performance analysis
    • Ballistic studies covering internal, external and terminal ballistics
  • Lethality assessment for both direct and indirect fire system (we have a simple but a unique mathematical model which unlike other commercial models does not require any fudge factors-hence more accurate)
  • Ammunition and ballistics design and safety
  • The forensic analysis of blood stains and projectile trajectories
