Now in its fifth year the ioia symposium hosted by Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom is now open for pre-registration.
This year the theme for the symposium is:
‘How do they do it?’
How many today would say that technological superiority is the key to success in contemporary operations? Despite experiences in expeditionary warfare, for example in Korea and Vietnam, this was a view that drove the military-industrial base throughout the Cold War with its focus on weapon platforms, air-land battle and pre-emptive strikes. Expeditionary experience of late has again highlighted limitations of technological superiority in complex and knotty wars ‘amongst the people’. Commanders and planners now have to navigate operations where notions of military superiority come up against asymmetric threats and open debates about legitimacy and the human cost; where ‘the people are the prize’. This is clearly not a trivial exercise for commanders and planners and it is with this very practical problem in mind that our symposium addresses the science of what is popularly called ‘hearts and minds’. This year we will take a closer look at how different sectors both within the military and across the public and private sectors approach influence. Looking at lessons learned from influence campaigns conducted in less than ideal conditions we seek cross fertilization and synergies that will aid those facing the challenges of modern conflict.
Cranfield University at the UK Defence Academy offer a range of courses to support the modern influence practitioner. Click here hearts and minds for more details.
