Current activities

Research Interests

Engineering design

This aspect is based on the knowledge and experience gained from many years of product development. This underpins the advanced design and analysis capabilities to ensure that solutions are of genuine commercial benefit to practical tasks. Engineering design includes the following key areas:

  • Design for manufacture
  • Material selection and processing
  • Transmission systems (shafts, gears, couplings etc.)
  • Bearing and lubrication systems
  • Thermal, fluid and thermodynamic evaluations Prototype
Integrated technology of design and manufacture

The research concerns the integration of CAD/CAE/CAM techniques from basic engineering design through to the total design and manufacture process. This aspect deals with conceptual design, system design, optimum design, 3D virtual design, kinematic analysis, FEA dynamic analysis, 3D CAE simulation, prototype and production.

Power train and transmission system

This aspect relates to an assembly of gears and associated parts by which power is transmitted from an engine to a driving axle. Research is concentrated on design, modelling and control of continuously variable transmission systems as well as hybrid power trains, systems and components.

  • Gear meshing theory
  • Novel transmission pairs
  • Worm gear transmission. Cylindrical worm gears, globoid worm gears, involute cylindrical worm matting with helical gear, and globoid worm matting with helical gear
  • Virtual simulation of gear manufacture, localized tooth contact analysis, FEA of gear strength, FEA of loaded tooth contact analysis, and gear load rating
  • Gear optimization design and diverse manufacture methods
  • The state of the art in parametrical design of power trains and gearboxes
