Current activities

Kathryn is a member of the Centre for Defence Acquisition with particular interests in the modelling of defence logistics and cost estimation and forecasting. Her teaching activities include teaching Management Science, Operational Analysis, statistics and mathematics to MSc degrees and to specialist short courses. In particular, she is responsible for or contributes to:

• Defence Acquisition Management (DAM) MSc – Supply Network Analysis and Modelling
• Defence Acquisition Management (DAM) MSc – Cost Estimation and Forecasting
• Military Operational Research (MSc) and Defence Simulation and Modelling (MSc) – Logistics Modelling, Discrete Event Simulation and Operational Research Techniques

Kathryn’s consultancy experience includes combat modelling and a number of defence logistics projects.  These have included a major logistics study for the MOD investigating the amount of ammunition for land-based weapon systems that should be purchased, the comparison of different logistics models and studies of the maintenance systems for in-service helicopter fleets. Her current projects include the cost-benefit analysis of Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) in the context of Military Land Vehicles.

Background

Kathryn Wand studied mathematics at Universities of London and Oxford and obtained her PhD in Operational Research from Cranfield University. She has held various posts at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham. These have involved research into extensions of Lanchester’s Theory of Combat, the design implementation and testing of Lanchester based models of combat and the modelling of stochastic duels, logistics systems, force restructuring problems and military communications.
