Current activities
Jeremy Smith is Head of the Defence Analysis Group at Cranfield University and has been with Cranfield University since 2000, prior to which he was employed with BAE SYSTEMS Royal Ordnance since 1988 as manager of the Systems and Operational Analysis Team. He lectures in masters level Systems Engineering, Operational Research and Modelling. He is experienced in the development and presentation of short courses at graduate to senior level. He enjoys some twenty years experience in the UK defence industry involving operational analysis and systems engineering across land and air systems projects. He is experienced at senior technical management levels, including industry technical team management, bid management and project management for defence projects.
Research interests include simulation for aircrew and infantry training, military capability analysis and military decision making analysis. Recent consultancy contracts include training needs analysis for mission training through distributed simulation, technologies for future weapon systems, technology investment analysis and medium weight capability analysis for customers including industry, the DPA and the ECC.
He lectures in military operational research, management science, systems engineering and modelling and simulation up to MSc level and is responsible for developing and delivering lectures to a broad range of courses from full time MSc to short courses on and off site. He undertakes a broad range of research and consultancy including the following recent projects: Training Needs Analysis for Mission Training through Distributed Simulation for UK MoD, Technologies for Future Weapon Systems, Technology Investment Analysis, Medium Weight Capability Analysis, FRES TDP support (systems engineering and trials support) andFRES Rainbow Team Support.
He manages Wargaming and Combat Modelling, Weapon Assessment courses, Systems Engineering Simulation and Modelling, Management Science and Defence Simulation (at MSc level). Recently he has had responsibility for case studies and activities related to Technical Employment training (systems engineering including context analysis, requirements generation, stakeholder analysis, options evaluation techniques, bid assessment and generation). He is the Cranfield representative on Simulation and Synthetic Environment National Advisor Council. (SSENAC).
Background
Previously he was with BAE SYSTEMS Royal Ordnance, Shrivenham, where he was manager of Systems and Operational Analysis, responsible for team of operational analysts involved in company and contract funded future requirements analysis and assessments of a multitude of weapon systems including artillery, armoured fighting vehicles and infantry systems.
