Background

Dr James Padfield graduated from the University of Wales Swansea with an Honours degree in Chemistry and Computer Science in 1998. He stayed at Swansea to study the properties of solvatochromic dyes using a combination of physical and computational techniques, receiving his PhD in 2003.

James then worked as a post-doctoral researcher, sponsored by Unilever, investigating sulphonation reactions used in the industrial manufacture of surfactants, using a range of computational methods to determine reaction mechanisms. A short career break followed, and then a period spent training as a secondary school science teacher.

He joined Cranfield University in July 2007.
