Current activities

Teaching

Dr David Lane is Director of the Forensic MSc Programme and leader of two modules: Analytical Techniques and Trace Evidence.

Research

His main research interest is the growth and analysis of compound semiconductors for thin film solar cells and in particular assessing new sustainable materials by high throughput, combinatorial techniques.

The growth techniques used by David’s team include sputter coating, chemical bath deposition, spray pyrolysis, close space sublimation and vacuum evaporation. Analysis is by SEM, XRD, spectroscopic ellipsometry and RBS.

David has also used ion beam techniques, such as RBS, PIXE and NRA to analyse specimens ranging from soil and glass to biological materials and explosives.

Background

David joined Cranfield University in 1985 after spending three years in industry. After completing a doctorate in 'Laser Interactions with Natural and Ion Beam Modified Optical Surfaces' he joined the University's lecturing staff, teaching physics on courses that range from undergraduate and diploma to MSc. During his PhD he developed ion beam analysis techniques for the University’s Van De Graaff accelerator. These have been applied to film films, electronic devices, and biological and environment specimens.

He is now Reader in Analytical Physics and Advanced Materials in Cranfield Forensic Institute, and has published over fifty papers in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. David leads the University’s research into the growth, characterisation and numerical modelling of thin film photovoltaic solar cells, and was one of the founding members of aSiNet, the EU funded network on amorphous silicon technology, and PVNET, the EPSRC funded network on thin film photovoltaics. His research team is a member of  SUPERGEN PV-21 the EPSRC funded national consortium on inorganic solar cells, and was awarded a £1million EPSRC grant that started in April 2008. He was also a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2005.

In 1996 David helped establish the highly successful Forensic Engineering and Science MSc and was its Academic Leader since its first intake in 1998 and its Course Chairman from August 2004. In 2009 he expanded the University’s forensic education through the development of the new Forensic MSc Programme. This highly versatile modular programme allows students to graduate from specific themes that more closely match their specific areas of expertise, namely:

Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology MSc

Forensic Ballistics MSc

Forensic Engineering and Science MSc

Forensic Explosive and Explosions Investigation MSc

Forensic Investigation MSc

David is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Chartered Physicist and a Professional Member of the Forensic Science Society.
