Current activities
Information Sharing on IEDs, ERW and landmines
He has recently coordinated a research programme on behalf of UK MOD assessing information sharing on the threats from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) and landmines between military and non military entities in conflict and post conflict situations. The research project is assessing a range of factors impacting upon information sharing including doctrine and procedures, security classification, roles responsibilities and mandates and potential Information and Communication Technologies.
Mine Action Management Training
He has recently assisted in the management training of Angolan mine clearance organisations in Namibia. The aim of the training is to improve the managerial capacity of Angolan middle managers in all aspects of mine clearance.
Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff Course
He is part of a Cranfield University team that delivers annual lectures to the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff Course in Accra. He concentrates on leadership and decision making during a crisis

Background
Rob Hyde-Bales is employed in the Centre for International Security and Resilience at Cranfield University as a programme manager.
He completed a full career in the UK Armed Forces in the Royal Engineers. Throughout his career he undertook numerous tours overseas working on humanitarian and development projects for the UK Government and the United Nations in the DRC and Pakistan. The projects included humanitarian bridge construction in DRC and the implementation of a humanitarian mines awareness programme in Pakistan for Afghan refugees. He has also undertaken humanitarian mine action projects in Libya on two occasions.
His final job in the Army was as Defence Adviser with the British High Commission in Jamaica. In this capacity he was responsible for Jamaica, Belize, the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos and the Cayman Islands. In these areas a key responsibility was that of the coordination of UK efforts towards humanitarian relief and disaster assistance during the Caribbean hurricane season. He also planned and set up the Caribbean Search Centre in Kingston, Jamaica that is designed to train security forces across the Caribbean on counter criminal activities and specifically the search for contraband of all types – firearms, narcotics, explosives.
