Current activities

Kyle Hutchings joined Cranfield University in September 2008 as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. David Lane. Funded by the EPSRC, this project is part of the SUPERGEN ‘Photovoltaic materials of the 21st century’ consortium. The project aims to investigate the high throughput screening of new alternative and sustainable photovoltaic materials. More specifically, Kyle will focus on the third generation solar cell concept of intermediate band gap materials which in theory offers greater efficiency than conventional photovoltaics.

Background

Kyle completed his undergraduate Physics BSc course at Loughborough University and graduated in 2007. The final year project involved working with CREST (Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology) and consisted of generating a solar irradiance input model to investigate the effects of solar incident angle on thin film photovoltaic performance. This contributed to providing accurate answers on the effective use of these devices under different operating conditions. He then spent a year working for a software company providing technical support and managing projects for a range of companies.
