Current activities

Dr. Roger Darby lectures and researches on HRM, strategic management, knowledge management and the management of change in post-conflict, transitional and developing states at Cranfield University, and is the Course Director of the MSc in Defence Management & Security in partnership with the Indonesian and British Governments and the newly formed Indonesian Defence University. He is also is heavily involved in research and teaching on the MSc Security Sector Management and the MDWSC courses run at Shrivenham and many regions across the world including Ethiopia, Malawi, and other regions in Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia in South East Asia, Georgia, Ukraine and Kosovo in Central and Eastern Europe and Uruguay and Brazil in South America. He also lectures widely, for example: on senior management courses at the University of Birmingham and acts as an academic advisor and KM forum member at Henley Business School.

His research has been presented at international conferences and published in academic and professional journals such as the European Business Review, Journal of European Industrial Training, Asian Pacific Business Review, Research and Practice in Human Resource Management. He is an external and internal PhD examiner and continues to supervise students at Master’s and PhD levels.

Dr Darby’s research interests include:

  • HRM and Capacity Building in post-conflict, transitional and developing states,
  • Inter- Agency working in the humanitarian space and the role of collaborative learning,
  • Knowledge Management and Cyber Defence

Background

With over 20 years experience, his professional expertise includes consultancy, training and development work with a wide variety of organisations both in the public, private and non-profit sectors in Europe and other parts of the world. At Cranfield University he was responsible for the development and became the Academic Leader for the first MSc IHRM (Defence) course run at Shrivenham in conjunction with the School of Management. He is a specialist in international human resource management and organisational behaviour, holds a DPhil from the University of Sussex, a MEd from the University of Birmingham and a BA (Hons) from the University of Warwick. Prior to joining Cranfield University he has held a number of academic appointments including at the University of Birmingham Business School, the European Business School (London) and Oxford Brookes University. In addition, internationally he has continued to hold visiting professorships in the former Indonesia, South Africa, Singapore and China. More recently he has held appointments at the Higher Colleges of Technology and the American University in Dubai in the Middle East.
