Background

Dr Matthew Andrews graduated with honours from the University of Edinburgh (2000) with a BSc in Chemistry.

After a brief period of time analysing beer for Scottish & Newcastle he worked at Evotecoai on custom synthesis and resin supported synthesis.

Eight months later Matt joined the Defence Academy of the UK, Cranfield University, where a PhD studentship became available in the area of trace detection and analysis of explosives. Matt took this position up in 2002 under the supervision of Dr John Bellerby. His research program was designing novel polymers for extracting trace quantities of explosives from both water and soil. This technique was combined with current analytical technology (High Performance Liquid Chromatography - HPLC) to improve the quantity of trace explosive recovered.

Matt was awarded a PhD in 2005, and then subsequently accepted a post-doctoral research post in detection of explosive vapours.

In 2006 he moved from the Detection and Analysis Group into the Formulations Group where the focus of the research was formulating energetic and non-energetic polymeric binders with crystalline explosives to reduce sensitiveness to accidental initiation.

In the last year he has also taken on a lecturing role teaching MSc students in a variety of areas relating to chemistry and explosives.
