Entry Requirements: A knowledge of calculus and the basic principles of Monte Carlo simulation would be helpful but are not essential. For MSc/PGDip/PGCert registration the normal Cranfield entry requirements will have to be satisfied

Course description

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide students with a general knowledge of the techniques used in war gaming, combat simulations and analytic battle models.

Description

The material covered includes:

  • An Introduction to the Methods used in Modelling Combat and their Application in Support of Defence Decision Making and Training
  • Combat Simulation
  • War Gaming/Interactive Simulation
  • Lanchester's Equations
  • War Gaming and Combat Modelling in Practice
  • Practicals

Tuition will be by means of lectures, exercises and practicals in the Simulation and Synthetic Environment Laboratory, where specific models will be presented and discussed.

The course may be credited towards a part-time MSc/PGDip/PGCert in Defence Simulation and Modelling or Military Operational Research.

To obtain a degree credit it is necessary to enrol for a module which includes, in addition to the short course, a programme of directed studies and a marked assignment.
