Operational Analysis, Modelling & Simulation (OAMS) Group

We have expertise in the mathematical, statistical and judgmental based methods of operational analysis used in support of defence decision making and in the modeling and simulation of defence systems for analysis, experimentation and training.  A dedicated Simulation and Synthetic Environment Laboratory (SSEL) enables us to conduct teaching and research covering everything from constructive simulations through to interactive visual simulations and the creation of a synthetic battle space, plus all the associated technologies – computer generated forces (CGF), computer graphics, terrain databases and networking. The recently formed Decision Analysis and Risk Modelling Laboratory (DARMLab) provides a focus for research and teaching in those areas.

The group runs a postgraduate programme (MSc, diploma and certificate) with two linked themes: Defence Simulation and Modelling, and Military Operational Research.  The courses are available on both a full-time and a part-time basis.

Research and Consultancy

As well as applying this expertise in the teaching of these subjects on postgraduate and short courses here at Shrivenham, members of the group undertake research and consultancy and have been involved in project such as:

  • The construction of an urban battle model for training
  • The development and application of battlefield logistics models
  • The exploration of new agent based models of conflict
  • The study of military decision making using Bayesian Belief networks
  • The delivery of a series of NATO lectures on Modelling and Simulation
