Department of Engineering and Applied Science

The Department of Engineering and Applied Science is the focus for all science and engineering activity at The Defence Academy of The United Kingdom. We bring together expertise in a diverse, yet comprehensive, range of technologies to provide education, research and consultancy advice to the defence and security sectors.

We run a number of unique Masters courses: Explosive Ordnance Engineering, Forensic Engineering and Science, Gun System Design, Guided Weapons, Military Airworthiness, Forensic Computing and Military Vehicle Technology. We also deliver a large number of specialist short courses in related fields. Some of these are  delivered at our campus at Shrivenham, but we also travel all over the world delivering bespoke courses to defence and security partners in other countries.

All of this teaching activity is underpinned by a vibrant research programme, much of which is funded by the MOD, the research councils and industry. We also play a key part as advisers to MOD and to the defence and security industries, participating in most major UK programmes.

We have some excellent facilities, many of which are unique. We have first class ballistic and explosive ranges on site and a major ordnance test facility on Salisbury Plain. In addition we have facilities for manufacturing and testing explosives, wind tunnels for testing land and air vehicles, engine test laboratories, electric vehicle laboratories, forensic laboratories, a fuels laboratory and an engineering dynamics centre. Whether you are a student, a researcher or a client, you will have access to these facilities, which are there to support you.

In summary, we are the world-leading University Department for technology in support of defence and security. Our academics are renowned internationally for their work and we offer an extensive range of unique courses. We are keen to collaborate with you in research, keen to provide you with consultancy advice and keen to design and deliver bespoke courses for your staff. Do get in touch.
