Applied Optical Sensors  Group

The Applied Optical Sensors Group undertakes research and provides consultancy and expert advice in the areas of fibre optic sensing technologies and composite materials.

Staff within the Group combine expertise in the following areas:

Process Monitoring

  • Simultaneous and real-time process monitoring
  • Thermal, spectral, physical and rheological characteristics of materials
  • Technologies based on optical fibre properties

Structural Health Monitoring

  • Integrity assessment of civil structures (composite bridge, foundation piles and concrete columns) and composite materials
  • Use of optical fibre-based sensors
  • Development of strategies for sensor bonding and protection

Novel Manufacturing Techniques

  • Laser-ablated and chemical-etched optical Fabry-Perot sensors

Facilities and Instrumentation

The Group welcomes enquiries from industry or academia relating to these research themes.
