Communications and Wireless Networks Group

The Communications and Wireless Networks Group provides a focus within the Department of Informatics and Systems Engineering (DISE) for teaching and research in the area of civilian and military communication systems, including communications electronic warfare.

The main thrusts of the Group’s research lie in:
• broadband communications in ‘difficult environments’
• emitter geolocation methods
• bandsharing methods for improved spectrum management and cognitive radio
• passive coherent location methods (PCL)

Specific research projects that the Group have been involved with include:
• Wideband underwater acoustic communications
• Mitigation of acoustic interference from active SONARs for improved underwater acoustic communications
• Low-cost robust underwater acoustic data link
• Channel estimation algorithms for MIMO communication systems
• Fast emitter geolocation using single and multiple airborne platforms
• Agent-based methods for interference mapping to aid overlay bandsharing
• Bistatic and multistatic passive coherent location systems

Current research is concerned primarily with the development of a simulation tool for the development of enhanced avionics data links for next generation aircraft for improved integrated engine health monitoring.

The group strongly supports the Academic Provider Contract and provides the communications and networks teaching on a number of AP courses, including Military Electronic Systems MSc, Battlespace Technology MSc, and the Guided-weapons Systems Course MSc.

It also provides a number of professional short courses at both introductory and advanced levels.  These include:

• Military Communications
• SONAR Systems
• Communications Electronic Warfare
• Algorithms for Adaptive Antennas

Members of the Group
• Professor R F Ormondroyd
• Dr C R Walters
• Dr Alex Mikhalev
• Dr V Y Comley
• Mr C Barnes.
