Mine Action

The Centre for International Security and Resilience (CISR) includes Cranfield Mine Action which has been involved in the provision of humanitarian and commercial mine action consultancy work since 1999. The focus of CISR's mine action activities is on the development of resilient national mine action capabilities, and the provision of applied research, analysis and assistance projects to humanitarian and commercial organisations, national authorities and donors within the mine action sector.

Previous clients have included:

  • National mine action programmes in more than 20 countries (including Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq and Sudan)
  • United Nations agencies including UNDP, UNOPS, UNMAS and UNICEF;
  • Government departments including the United States Department of State and the UK Department for International Development;
  • Commercial petrochemical companies; and
  • Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs)

Capacity development activities are driven by the conduct of training needs analyses and the design and development of education and training programmes for national mine action managers and international technical advisors. To date, Cranfield has provided mine action management education and specialist training to more than 1,500 managers from 68 countries including Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia, Iraq and Sudan.

Cranfield applied research, analysis and assistance project areas have included provision of:

  • Training and assistance in mine action strategic planning and the development of national mine action strategic plans;
  • Assistance in the transition of UN mine action programs to national ownership;
  • Feasibility studies, evaluations, and risk analyses;
  • Software tools and management information systems;
  • Testing and evaluation of mine action equipments and explosives; and
  • Requirements analyses including equipment and training needs.

In recognition of the capacity development and operational assistance work conducted by members of the Resilience Centre staff in humanitarian mine action, Cranfield University were awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education.
