Centre for Materials Science and Engineering

The Centre for Materials Science and Engineering applies its knowledge of materials, physics and engineering to a range of defence, security, environmental and medical problems. Its academic staff manage a range of PhD, Masters and other postgraduate courses and contribute to other courses in the areas of defence technology, medical science and security. The Centre has a strong research ethos and attracts funding from research councils, MOD and industry. It has an established track record in metallurgy, materials science, forensic science and engineering, archaeology and biomedical materials. It is making a strong contribution to addressing the problems of global warming through its work on fuel cells and solar energy.
The Centre has a range of well equipped laboratories offering conventional materials testing, imaging, X-ray diffraction and radiation sources. Facilities exist for the preparation and manufacture of materials and the Centre has access to a full range of analytical laboratories offering a wide range of chemical analysis techniques.
The Centre's staff are experienced in a wide range of materials related subjects and work across several different sectors. With their expertise and facilities they are well placed to provide up to date training and education, research and consultancy.
