Egyptian Historical Chronology

This is a major project sponsored by the Leverhulme Trust which has been running since 2006.

The aim of the project is to test the Egyptian historical chronology which is built up from historical sources and king lists. This is done by carefully radiocarbon dating ancient material that is of very well determined historical date, maybe from a single king’s reign or even a year from a king’s reign. The resulting data should produce the first scientifically verified chronology for ancient Egypt.

Material for the work has been kindly provided by many museums throughout the world including:

The British Museum, London

The Louvre, Paris

Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Egyptian Museum, Berlin

The Ashmolean Museum, UK

The Petrie Museum, UCL, London

Kew Gardens, London

The is a joint project between Oxford University and Cranfield University and further information can be found at Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit
