The Strategic Capability Partnership

Definition of Aeronautical Engineering:

"Those Technologies integral to the design, development, manufacture and through life support of an air vehicle platform"

"Those Technologies which enable the vehicle to fly"

Role of the Aeronautical Engineering Strategic Partner:

  • Co-ordination and integration of Aeronautical Engineering research within the partnership an ambassador rather than a banker
  • Link to other strategic partnerships
  • Work closely with BAE SYSTEMS to ensure progress and development of the partnership
  • To focus activities to deliver the aims of the partnership
  • To ensure the capability existing for technology demonstration

The Strategic Capability partnership between BAE Systems and Cranfield University supports an integrated research and technology programme, key staff recruitment and the delivery of specific training and education programmes. The Integrated Research Programme, launched in 2004, employs Cranfield and nine other universities working in their specialist fields. It is a joint collaboration between BAE Systems and EPSRC worth over £6 million and addresses the long-term needs of the aerospace and defence industries.

The 5 year programme culminates in a "flying demonstrator" which will showcase the technologies developed by the University network in novel aerodynamic manoeuvre effectors, low cost manufacturing, electromagnetic effect prediction, novel control systems and materials. Apart from the challenging technical objectives the project serves as a template for large-scale industry-academic research collaboration and will produce highly skilled post-graduates who have been exposed to large company project management and strategic decision making.

Strategic Alliance Agreement Annexes

The old SCP Agreement has been superseded by the Strategic Alliance Agreement (ZN1197 AT2120) and the agreement conditions will be those of the Enabling Agreement ZN1314. Instead of raising an attachment to the SCP agreement, an Annex to the Enabling agreement will be raised using 'SA' instead of 'EA' as the identifier. Details about the old Attachments or new Annexes to the SAA can be found on the Agreements web page.
