Professor Ian Wallace
Professor Ian Wallace was educated in Edinburgh where he gained his BSc and PhD in Chemistry.
He then worked on research into propellants and energetic materials at the MOD's Explosives Research and Development Establishment at Waltham Abbey before moving to project management appointments for the Procurement Executive in London, where he was responsible for the acquisition of air weapons. He spent some time as Controller Air's Information Technology Director before being appointed as Scientific Advisor to the Chief Inspector of Naval Ordnance in Bath.
He became Vice-President of the Ordnance Board, the MOD's Director of Standardisation and Director of Safety Policy before becoming the first Director of the Defence Ordnance Safety Group and the MOD's Chief Inspector of Explosives.
He is currently Professor and Head of Cranfield Defence and Security at the UK Defence Academy at Shrivenham. He is responsible for delivering the University's education and training programme to UK MOD and the defence and security sector worldwide. He also leads the University's diverse research programme in the sector. His own special interests are explosives safety, the ageing of explosives, competence and education for ordnance specialists and in the issue of sustainable development in the defence environment.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Chartered Chemist and a member of the Defence Nuclear Safety Committee and is a subject matter expert for the Defence Scientific Advisory Council.
