Department of Integrated Systems

The Department of Integrated Systems is led by Professor Phil Webb and is comprised of five groups:

Formerly the Systems Engineering and Human Factors Department, the Integrated Systems Department was formed in 2012 to reflect its diverse work on the close interaction of people and technology. There are 14 members of academic staff working within the Department.


  • Our impact and facilities

    The Department of Integrated System’s aim is to bring people and complex systems closer together through innovative approaches to research and technology development. Our work spans across a number of industries including aerospace and defence. As increasing complex technologies are deployed in these domains, the need to understand human interaction is of ever greater importance. The combination of engineers, human factors specialists, and psychologists within the department means that a holistic view can be taken. The current application domains are diverse and range from factory shop floors to military operations.

    We have a long-term strategic relationship working with Airbus and are currently developing real advanced production solutions for the company. We also work with Airbus and other companies on the human aspects of production and the effect of new technologies and systems on people within the workplace.

    Systems Engineering education research and consultancy is focused on understanding modern systems challenges, developing flexible, practical approaches to achieve systems success and working with a range of industrial customers to help them to develop a successful capability. We have extensive experience in industry ourselves, enabling us to relate to the realities of systems engineering in complex, extended, often international enterprises.

    Our activities are highly focused on the needs of industry and are engaged with major organisations involved in complex, high value, high risk systems. We deliver many short courses for industrial customers focused on improving their systems engineering capabilities. Our staff are active in a number of research programmes and are represented on the National Technical Committee for Systems Engineering.

    As a result of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is undergoing a period of considerable organisational change (Interim Force 2015, Future Force 2020). The Human Capability Group are proud to have undertaken high quality research throughout all levels of the Armed Forces, the results of which have informed MoD strategic decision-making.

    The Driving Research Group is unique in its application of scientific research and knowledge to a wide variety of driver behaviour, education and training issues in the design and development of educational interventions for vulnerable road users. The group has a wealth of knowledge and experience spanning over twenty five years in the driver behaviour field. Particular strengths are the measurement of the psychological factors that influence driver behaviour and the development of interventions to ameliorate driver risk.

    Within these core skill sets there are a number of diverse application areas encompassing:

    Engagements with business and industry range form short-term feasibility studies to long-term secondments of staff. Recent examples include a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) on automated sealant application and the development of new aircraft assembly technologies in collaboration with Airbus. We also provide standard and bespoke training courses in all our areas of expertise and currently deliver in house training to a number of leading companies and government departments.
