The Centre for Defence Engineering is focussed on the provision of excellence within the multiple disciplines that make up defence engineering and technology.  Our activities are orientated around education, research and consultancy, within the defence and security sectors, and are applied in context and real-world based. 

 

The Centre for Defence Engineering is led by Professor Amer Hameed and comprises of four groups:

 

We operate through several specialities, including:

  • Lethality - gun systems, small arms through to large calibre artillery systems and guided weapons
  • Survivability - personal protection such as body armour through to armour systems for vehicle platforms and the blast loading produced on structures by the detonation of high explosive charges.
  • Mobility
  • Land - technology of land systems from sub systems through to vehicle platforms

  • Current research projects

    Research within the Centre for Defence Engineering includes:

    • Future Dismounted Close Combat (FDCC) - A programme of work for the MoD to inform future weapon procurement decisions.
    • Initial design review for the AUStyre EF-88 Assault Rifle for the Australian Department of Defence
    • 40mm CTA Review – A technical audit of the feasibility of the introduction of 40mm CTA for the Warrior upgrade for the MoD.
    • Guided Weapons - Numerical aerodynamics models were developed for several missiles to assist the customer in making objective decisions regarding future weapon procurements.
    • Testing of stab and ballistic body armour to the HOSDB Body Armour Standards for UK Police (2007) Publication 39/07.
    • Aluminium armour research programme – Multi organisation collaboration examining aerospace aluminium alloys and their suitability for use in armoured vehicles investigating their protection characteristics and suitability for fabrication with modern welding techniques.
    • Measurement of fundamental material properties at high strain rates - Sponsored by Jaguar cars the results were fed into an in house numerical model for crush testing.
    • Jet Research and Propulsion Integration – Investigations into the interaction of jets, and jet-induced flowfields, with the ground and airframe. This is of great importance for the design and operation of short take-off, vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft.
    • Hang-glider pilot and cocoon drag testing
