Crashworthiness, Impact & Structural Mechanics Group
The Group has established a unique research capability for theoretical, numerical and experimental investigation of the dynamic behaviour of materials and structures and provides expertise in the following;
- development and application of simulation tools
- experimental techniques for testing of structures and materials under static and dynamic loading.
The Group is working in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States (LANL) in the field of meshless methods development. The Group also has research projects with participants from all the major European aerospace research, test organisations and universities.
One of the main sources of income for the Group is industrially sponsored research. This covers subjects including aerospace and automotive crashworthiness, structural health monitoring and impact dynamics including hypervelocity impact for spacecraft protection.
Expertise:
- Aerospace and Automotive Crashworthiness and Structural Analysis
- Impact on Structures (High up to hypervelocity impacts)
- Structural Dynamics/Structural Health Monitoring/
Multidisciplinary Optimisation - Constitutive Models including failure
- Linear and Non-Linear Finite Element Methods
- Meshless Methods
